Portugal Vineyard Tours
Explore the best Portugal vineyard tours with Viavinum. From the terraced quintas of the Douro Valley to the granite pergolas of Vinho Verde and the golden plains of the Alentejo, our group and private itineraries take you into the vineyards themselves: walking the rows with the people who farm them, tasting in the cellar and sleeping at wine estates. Travel Portugal region by region, glass in hand, at an unhurried pace.
Portugal is one of the most rewarding countries in Europe to explore vineyard by vineyard. Within a few hours you can travel from the Atlantic greenery of the Minho to the schist terraces of the Douro or the cork-oak plains of the Alentejo, and every region pours something genuinely different.
At Viavinum we design Portugal vineyard tours built around the visits themselves: family-run quintas, historic cellars and small growers who open their doors for unhurried, expert-guided wine tastings in Portugal.
Not sure where to start? Our guide to Portugal’s wine regions maps the whole country, and below you will find the regions we visit most, how to move between them and the departures confirmed for 2026.
From the Douro terraces to the Alentejo plains, Portugal's vineyards await you!

Portugal vineyard tours
Our itineraries are planned so that you spend real time among the vines. You will walk terraced plots with the viticulturist, learn to read old-vine field blends and taste Port and still wines in the cellars where they age.
During the vindima, from late August into October, many quintas let you follow the harvest and the treading of the grapes up close.
Every visit is arranged in advance with the estate, so the day runs at a comfortable, well-guided pace from the first vineyard to the last glass.
How to get around Portugal's vineyards
Distances in Portugal are short: the Douro is around ninety minutes from Porto, and the Alentejo under two hours from Lisbon. We handle every transfer in private transport, so nobody has to drive after the tastings. To picture the whole journey first, see our overview of Portugal’s wine routes.

Vineyard tours in southern Portugal: Alentejo, Setúbal and Lisbon
The Alentejo is Portugal at its most expansive: whitewashed villages, cork oaks and sun-drenched estates producing smooth, full-bodied reds, some still fermented in clay talhas as in Roman times. Many wineries here double as country hotels, ideal for a slow vineyard tour of the south.
Closer to the capital, the Setúbal Peninsula is famous for its fortified Moscatel, while the Lisbon region hides Atlantic vineyards within an easy day trip of the city — perfect if your route through Portugal starts or ends there.

Five wine regions to explore vine by vine

Douro Valley
Terraced quintas above the river, Port and elegant reds, with harvest visits in September

Vinho Verde & Minho
Granite pergolas and fresh Atlantic whites — Alvarinho and Loureiro — in Portugal's green north

Alentejo
Sun-drenched estates among cork oaks, with rounded reds and wines aged in clay talhas

Dão
Mountain-sheltered vineyards of Touriga Nacional and Encruzado, quiet and deeply traditional

Setúbal & Lisbon
Moscatel de Setúbal and Atlantic vineyards within easy reach of the capital
Group or private: choose your Portugal vineyard tour
Travel on a scheduled small-group departure with like-minded wine lovers and a set route through Portugal’s key regions, or ask us for a private version: from a long weekend in the Douro to two weeks linking the Minho with the Alentejo. Both formats include the same carefully chosen quintas, expert guiding and seamless logistics — the difference is simply the dates, the company and the pace you prefer.
When is the best time for a vineyard tour of Portugal?
September and October are the vindima, when the vineyards are at their liveliest, while late February brings the almond blossom to the Douro terraces. Spring and autumn offer mild weather everywhere; midsummer can be very hot inland in the Alentejo.
Which wine region should I choose for a Portugal vineyard tour?
The Douro Valley is the most iconic, with its terraced quintas and Port cellars. The Alentejo suits travellers who want space, gastronomy and winery-hotels, while Vinho Verde and the Dão reward those looking for quieter, cooler-climate vineyards.
Can I visit Portugal's vineyards without renting a car?
Yes. All our Portugal vineyard tours include private transport with a driver, using Porto, Lisbon or a wine estate as your base, so you can enjoy every tasting without worrying about the road.
How many days do I need to tour Portugal's vineyards?
Allow four to five days for one region, such as the Douro, and about a week to combine two. Our longer 2026 itineraries spend up to fifteen days linking northern Spain, the Minho, the Douro and Lisbon.
Harvest, almond blossom and the vineyard calendar
The vineyard year sets the rhythm of any tour. In September the Douro fills with grape lorries and the scent of fermenting must; in late winter the almond trees flower white and pink along the terraces, the valley’s quietest and most photogenic season. Whatever the month, our Douro Valley wine tastings adapt to what is happening among the vines.
Confirmed 2026 departures with vineyard visits
These escorted tours all include time in the vineyards and have confirmed dates for 2026: Porto and Douro Valley, 6–10 November; Wonders of Northern Spain and Portugal, departing 11–25 October and 1–15 November; and Lisbon and Alentejo, a luxury food and wine tour, with departures on 28 September – 4 October, 5–11 October, 19–25 October and 9–15 November.
