Luxury Tours in Portugal

Viavinum creates luxury tours in Portugal for travellers who want the country at its most personal: the terraced vineyards of the Douro from a private boat, the historic port lodges of Vila Nova de Gaia, the quintas of the Alentejo and the cellars just south of Lisbon. Small group departures and private journeys with exclusive winery access, quinta hotels overlooking the river and a table booked at the restaurants that matter.

Portugal rewards travellers who slow down. It is small enough to cross in a few hours, yet it holds the oldest demarcated wine region in the world, an Atlantic coastline, two of Europe’s most characterful cities and a food culture that has quietly become one of the continent’s best.

Our luxury tours in Portugal are built around wine, but never only around wine. A morning walking the terraces of a Douro quinta with the winemaker, lunch on a terrace above the river, an afternoon tasting old tawnies in a lodge in Gaia, dinner in Porto. Small numbers, private guides and estates that receive very few visitors a year.

Luxury Travel in Portugal, Designed Around the Estates

Every luxury Portugal tour we plan brings together the same elements:

  • Private quinta visits and tastings in the Douro, the Alentejo and the Setúbal peninsula, hosted by owners and winemakers
  • Port lodge experiences in Vila Nova de Gaia, including verticals of aged tawnies and vintage ports
  • Boutique quinta hotels and manor houses, many of them working wine estates with views over the vineyards
  • Portuguese gastronomy at its best, from Michelin-starred kitchens in Porto and Lisbon to long lunches at the quintas
  • Private guides, transport and river cruising, so the day moves at your pace

Join a small group departure, travel privately with a private wine tour, or let us design a custom journey around your own dates.

The Douro is the oldest demarcated wine region in the world and still one of the least crowded. On our luxury tours in Portugal you walk its terraces with the people who farm them, taste in cellars that have been in the same family for generations, and sleep in a quinta above the river — with the whole valley to yourself at sunset.

Where to Go on a Luxury Tour in Portugal

Portugal packs an extraordinary variety into a short distance. The Douro Valley is the headline act: schist terraces cut into the hillsides, quintas reached by winding roads and a river that is best seen from the water. Porto adds the port lodges, the Ribeira and a food scene that has transformed in a decade. South of Lisbon, the Setúbal peninsula produces Moscatel and elegant reds within an hour of the capital. And the Alentejo offers wide plains, whitewashed villages, cork oaks and some of the country’s most ambitious modern wineries.

Most journeys combine two or three of these. Read more about the country’s appellations in our guide to Portugal wine regions, or see our Portugal vineyard tours for the full range of itineraries.

Private and Small Group Luxury Tours of Portugal

We work in three formats, all with the same level of access to the estates:

  • Small group luxury tours — scheduled departures with a maximum of a dozen travellers, expert wine guides and every detail arranged in advance.
  • Private luxury tours of Portugal — your dates, your pace, only your party. The best way to reach quintas that receive very few visitors.
  • Bespoke journeys — celebrations, collectors’ trips and corporate travel, combining Portugal with northern Spain if you want a longer route.

Travellers often pair Portugal with our Spanish wine regions, since Rías Baixas and Ribera del Duero are within easy reach of the Douro.

Want to read on first? Our guide to wine tasting in Portugal covers the regions, the grapes and the best times to visit.

September and early October are exceptional: the Douro harvest is in full swing, the terraces turn gold and the quintas are alive with activity. Spring, from April to June, is equally beautiful and noticeably quieter, with mild weather and cellars at rest. Summer is hot inland but perfect on the coast, and winter suits travellers who want Porto and Lisbon with almost nobody else around.

Five to seven days is the sweet spot: enough for Porto, three or four days in the Douro and a night or two in Lisbon or the Alentejo. Four days works well if you concentrate on Porto and the Douro alone. Ten days lets you add the Alentejo properly, or continue into Spain towards Rías Baixas and Ribera del Duero.

Private guides, visits and tastings at carefully selected quintas and port lodges, transport throughout the itinerary, boutique quinta hotels and most meals, always with Portuguese wine on the table. Group sizes stay small so every visit remains personal, and each itinerary details exactly what is included before you book.

Yes, and it is one of our most requested routes. The Douro flows on into Spain as the Duero, so Ribera del Duero, Rueda and Rías Baixas are all within reach of Porto. We regularly design private journeys that cross the border, and you can see the Spanish side in our guide to Spanish wine regions.
